Can you put a sauna outside without 240V?
Yes, but the choice is small: a few 120V outdoor infrared cabins, wood-fired heaters, or a sauna tent.
Of the 17 outdoor-rated saunas in our database, 2 run on 120V. Both still need a dedicated circuit at 20 amps or more, not a normal outdoor outlet.
- Sunray Logan: 2 people, 120V / 25A, $4,290
- Sunray Grandby: 3 people, 120V / 20A, $3,990
Why most outdoor saunas need 240V
Outdoor cabins are larger and lose heat to the weather, so they need bigger heaters. A normal 120V, 15A circuit supplies about 1,800 watts; a typical stove for a 4-person barrel is 6,000 watts.
The other two options
- Wood-fired heater. No electricity for the heat at all. Most barrel saunas offer one, though many installs still run a small circuit for lighting. Check local fire and chimney rules.
- Sauna tent. Portable and cheap, with a wood stove or a small electric heater. Not a permanent cabin, but it skips the electrician entirely.
